Structural weight saving is one of the option to reduce energy consumption of materials. Architecture design of multimaterials can take place at various scales and offers new possibilities.

Research will be conducted along 3 main axes :

  • IRP 3-1. New multifunctional weight saving structures
  • IRP 3-2. Ductilization of brittle materials
  • IRP 3-3. Development of new metallic light alloys

Thsese projects will be strongly associated to the Integration Centre of the LABEX thanks in particular to the facilities of elaboration of 3D architectured materials.

The fundamental issues raised in the above programs are :

  1. identification of key parameters controlling properties in multifunctional architectured structures,
  2.  link between tolerance to damage and nature of the interfaces in macroscopically brittle materials,
  3. effect of hierarchical architectures on properties of metallic light alloys,
  4. topological optimisation.
