ARCHITECTURED MULTIFUNCTIONAL MATERIALS AND STRUCTURES
The workshop was intended to stimulate and inform collaboration between the CEMAM (Center of Excellence for Multifunctional Architectured Materials) at the University of Grenoble, France and UCSB's CMMS (Center for Multifunctional Materials and Structures). There are many complementary and shared research interests in both of these groups that pertain to thermal and environmental barrier coatings, thin film materials, structural materials design and optimization, modeling of failure and life prediction, discrete element methods, and tomography techniques. Both institutes share a common systems-based approach for designing multifunctional structures by introducing a scale for materials organization, the architecture between the microstructure and macroscopic shape, and controlling the spatial heterogeneity.
