Summary :
Bio-printing (BP) belongs to both bio-engineering and additive manufacturing. It includes: biological, physical, chemical, mathematical and engineering sciences, as well as the principles of engineering, and the technological bases to apply new concepts, that allow inventing methods for repairing/creating tissues for medical applications (with all the aspects of health/well-being). BP aims at “manufacturing” living organs. Beside the technological aspect of tissues “production” based on mastered techniques, the exploration of the complexity of the living being requires a deepened interdisciplinary approach.
The key question is definitely to have robust information in a systematic approach to move forward on modelling considerations, on new knowledges development, and on new applications. It is definitely one of the key dilemma of convergences, that is to know whether there is a hidden mechanism (and therefore to be discover) or, whatever the time spent, the watcher will never be able to understand the proper rule of the game.
The presentation will introduce the bio-printing technology, linked to some actual methodologies, together with general recalls on convergence concepts (complexity, determinism, entelechy,…). It is after some divergent research activities of “true” interdisciplinary research, that it may be possible to define industrial and medical applications.

Biography of J.C. André:
Engineering Sciences as Research Director at CNRS, involved in interaction between light and matter at LRGP CNRS Nancy (Optical and Photochemical Engineering – Photonics, additive manufacturing (i.e. stereo-lithography since 1984); new 3D and 4D processes in 3D manufacturing, including since a couple of years bio-printing (with about 275 Scientific papers (with peer evaluation), 150 Congress Proceedings, 45 Patents (with the first patent in 1984 on additive manufacturing (laser stereo-lithography)), 3 start-ups created on laser stereo-lithography by researcher of the research group, etc.).
Scientific Adviser for the CNRS Headquarter in Paris (26,000 permanent positions and about 35,000 people from Universities working with), Institute of Engineering and Systems Sciences for forecasting, for Socially Responsible Research (SRR), Assessment and scientific evaluation, interdisciplinarity, Integrated Innovation, Risks associated with nanotechnologies, energy, and ethics of/in Engineering Sciences Innovations.
Both activities play a key role for the study of an epistemology of NBIC convergence (nano) and for Bio-printing convergence which need to find, if possible, a rational approach in order to progress outside “simple” proofs of concept. This domain is under progress and presented at the conference.
