This cross-disciplinary field is addressed thanks to the presence of a team of biologists in the LABEX. The programme focusses on the bio-functionalization of material surfaces, using polyelectrolyte multilayer films and biomimetic membranes as multi-functional tools.

Combining characterization methods, modeling and numerical simulation will allow major advances in this field. Several ambitious projects are envisioned in a close future:
  • IRP 6-1. Control of stem cell fate, with applications to muscle and bone tissue engineering
  • IRP 6-2. Bone reconstruction
  • IRP 6-3. Cancer diagnosis and treatment
  • IRP 6-4. Vascular reconstruction
  • IRP 6-5. Structural biomaterials and biomimetics
Fundamental questions related to the above-mentioned project are :
  1. dependence of the cell signalling induced by a growth factor bound to a matrix on the material's mechanical properties,
  2. knowledge of the porosity of polyelectrolyte multilayer films for trapping or delivery of bioactive proteins at their surface
  3. knowledge of interactions between materials and proteins (such as protein adsorption on material surfaces or induced conformational changes).
